Youngest son of Jesse, a shepherd boy anointed by Samuel as second king of Israel while Saul still reigned. He killed the giant Goliath with a sling and stone. He is the most celebrated king in Israel's history — a warrior, musician, and poet who wrote many of the Psalms. Despite his great failures (including adultery with Bathsheba and arranging her husband's death), he repented wholeheartedly and is called a 'man after God's own heart.' He reigned 40 years and was promised an eternal dynasty, fulfilled in Jesus.
