Son of Ahitub and priest in the reign of David, beside Abiathar. Chronicles records his descent from Aaron through Eleazar and Phinehas. When David fled from Absalom, Zadok and the Levites came out carrying the ark. David told him to carry it back into the city and to return there with his son Ahimaaz. When Adonijah exalted himself to be king, Zadok was not with him. At David's order Zadok, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah took Solomon to Gihon, where Zadok anointed him with a horn of oil. Solomon put Zadok in the place of Abiathar. Ezekiel's vision of the temple gives the altar service to the sons of Zadok.
