Grandson of Boaz and Ruth, father of David. He lived in Bethlehem and brought his seven elder sons before Samuel who was looking for Israel's next king — God chose the youngest, David, who was out keeping the sheep. The prophets refer to the coming Messiah as a 'shoot from the stump of Jesse.'
