About

King of Israel, also written Joash, the son of Jehoahaz. He reigned sixteen years in Samaria and did evil in the sight of the Lord, keeping to the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat. When Elisha lay dying, the king came down and wept over him. Elisha had him shoot an arrow eastward and then strike the ground. He struck three times and stopped, and three times he defeated Ben-hadad of Syria and recovered the cities his father had lost. Challenged by Amaziah of Judah, he captured him at Beth Shemesh and broke down part of the wall of Jerusalem. His son Jeroboam reigned after him.
