John the Baptist

Son of Zechariah and Elizabeth, set apart as a Nazirite from birth. He lived in the desert wearing camel hair and eating locusts and wild honey. He preached a baptism of repentance in the Jordan River and declared the Messiah was coming. He baptized Jesus, upon whom he saw the Spirit descend like a dove. He declared Jesus to be 'the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.' He was imprisoned and beheaded by Herod Antipas at his stepdaughter Salome's request.
