Wealthy landowner in Bethlehem, a man of standing from the tribe of Judah. He showed exceptional kindness to Ruth the Moabite, allowing her to glean in his fields and providing her extra grain and protection. He fulfilled the role of kinsman-redeemer by purchasing Naomi's land and marrying Ruth. He became an ancestor of David and Jesus.
