Name meaning

"he has grasped" · Hebrew

A short form of Jehoahaz, "the LORD has grasped."

About

King of Judah, son of Jotham. He did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord but walked in the way of the kings of Israel and made his son pass through the fire (2 Kings 16). When Rezin of Syria and Pekah of Israel attacked Jerusalem, Isaiah told Ahaz not to fear and offered a sign from the Lord, which the king would not ask for. He appealed to Assyria with silver and gold from the temple. In Damascus he saw an altar and had the priest Urijah copy it. Chronicles says in his distress he sinned still more. His son Hezekiah reigned after him.
