Mordecai

Jewish exile in Susa who raised his orphaned cousin Esther as his own daughter. He sat at the king's gate and discovered a plot to assassinate the king, which he reported through Esther. He refused to bow to the arrogant official Haman, setting off the conflict. He helped coordinate Esther's courageous appeal to the king and ultimately received Haman's position.
