One of the seven chosen in Jerusalem to oversee the daily serving of tables, named next after Stephen, and not the apostle Philip. When the disciples were scattered he proclaimed Christ in the city of Samaria, and men and women were baptized. An angel sent him to the Gaza road, where he met an Ethiopian official reading Isaiah, told him about Jesus beginning from that passage, and baptized him. He was found at Azotus and preached from city to city as far as Caesarea. Later Paul and his companions stayed at his house there. Acts calls him the evangelist and says he had four unmarried daughters who prophesied.
