Firstborn of the twins of Judah and Tamar. At his birth his hand emerged first with a scarlet thread, but his brother Zerah was born ahead of him — hence his name, meaning 'breaking out.' He became the head of a leading clan of Judah and the ancestor through whom the royal line ran from Judah to Boaz, Jesse, and King David.
