Dan

Fifth son of Jacob, born to Bilhah, Rachel's servant. Rachel named him Dan ('he has vindicated') because she felt God had judged in her favor. Jacob's blessing called him 'a serpent by the roadside'; his tribe later migrated north and became associated with idolatry.
