About

Prophet known only by his name and the one vision that bears it. The book gives no father, no king and no date. What Obadiah saw concerned Edom, the nation descended from Esau, the brother of Jacob. Edom lived high among the crags and asked who could bring it down, and the Lord said he would. The charge is violence against a brother: when foreigners entered the gates of Jerusalem and cast lots for it, Edom was like one of them. The vision warns that what Edom has done will be done to it, and ends with the kingdom belonging to the Lord.
